Reading open interest with price

Open interest counts futures contracts still open at the close. Paired with price it shows who is driving the move: new money (rising OI) or positions closing (falling OI). Long buildup and short buildup reflect fresh conviction; short covering and long unwinding are exits and tend to fade faster.

For index futures, combine this with FII index futures positioning. For stocks close to their position limits, check the F&O ban list.

Frequently asked questions

How is futures buildup classified?
TradeLens compares each near-month future's closing price change with its change in open interest: price up and OI up is long buildup, price down and OI up is short buildup, price up and OI down is short covering, and price down and OI down is long unwinding.
What does rollover % mean?
Rollover is next-month open interest as a share of near-month plus next-month open interest. It rises through expiry week as traders carry positions forward; high rollover with long buildup suggests conviction in longs.
What is basis?
Basis is the future's closing price minus the underlying's price. A positive basis (premium) is normal because of the cost of carry; a discount can signal heavy shorting.
